The days around the summer solstice are the most difficult time of year for landscape photography. The sun rises early and sets late. From its first appearance on the northeastern horizon, it rises quickly, reaching about 75 degrees above the horizon at mid-day. Not long after sunrise, the sun’s light is glaring from high overhead; textures in the landscape are erased. Still, there is a time in the morning, before the sun rises too high above the horizon, that can provide a brief period for capturing landscape images. Rather than hibernate from photography this summer, I challenged myself to see what I could capture in the period May 21 to July 21 – one month before and after the summer solstice. Some of my images are in my newly added gallery Summer Solstice.
